Ammonia Water: Sal Ammoniac and Lime, Gas Caught in Cold Water
Heat sal ammoniac with slaked lime and ammonia gas comes off; cold water swallows it in great volume and becomes ammonia water. George Fownes's chemistry manual (1856) gives the method: equal weights of sal ammoniac and quicklime, damped, warmed in a flask, the gas washed and led into chilled distilled water. Let down with water it becomes household ammonia.
