Copper Ore Collection in Anatolia — Natural Copper and Malachite Identification

Anatolia is one of the world's oldest copper mining regions. Traces of copper processing dating back to 7000 BC have been found in settlements such as Çatalhöyük and Çayönü. This guide explains step by step the identification of natural copper ore in the field, the evaluation of green and blue discoloration, sample collection and basic classification methods.

Bakir cevherini tanimak

Bakir (Cu), atom numarasi 29 olan bir gecis metalidir. Dogada saf halde (dogal bakir) veya mineraller icinde bulunur. En yaygin bakir mineralleri malakit (Cu2(CO3)(OH)2, yesil), azurit (Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, mavi), kalkopirit (CuFeS2, altin sarisi) ve kuprit (Cu2O, kirmizi) dir. Anadolu'da ozellikle malakit ve dogal bakir yaygindir.

Anadolu'daki bakir bolgelerini bilmek

Turkiye'nin baslica bakir yataklari Karadeniz Bolgesi (Murgul, Artvin; Kure, Kastamonu), Guneydogu Anadolu (Ergani, Diyarbakir) ve Orta Anadolu'da (Nigde, Aksaray cevreleri) bulunur. Tarih oncesi bakir isleme, Catalhoyuk (Konya) ve Cayonu (Diyarbakir) kazilariyla belgelenmistir. Bu bolgeler, yuzey cevher ornekleri bulmak icin iyi baslangic noktalardir.

Check land permits

In Turkey, mining rights belong to the state (Mining Law, No. 3213). Small sample collection for scientific or educational purposes is generally tolerated, but a mining license is required for commercial excavation. Obtain permission from the landowner on private land. Sampling from archaeological sites and protected areas is prohibited.

Bakir mineralleri yuzey kayalarinda belirgin renklerle kendini gosterir. Malakit parlak yesil, azurit koyu mavi renktedir. Bu renkler, bakirin karbondioksit ve su ile reaksiyona girmesiyle olusur. Dogal bakiri tanimak

Dogal bakir, metalik parlakliga sahip kirmizimsi-turuncu bir metaldir. Genellikle bazalt veya kumtasi icinde kucuk parcalar, yapraklar veya dallanan sekiller halinde bulunur. Yeni kirilmis yuzeyi parlak bakir rengindedir, havayla temas eden yuzeyleri yesil-kahverengi patina ile kaplidir. Sertligi Mohs olceginde 2,5-3'tur — bir bakir sikke ile cizilebilir.

Preparing the necessary equipment

Before going out for fieldwork, prepare your equipment. A geology hammer, safety goggles, gloves, sample bags, labels and a marker are required. Sunscreen, water and a first aid kit should also be with you. Work in the field with at least two people.

Numune toplamak

Yesil veya mavi lekelenme gosteren kayalari jeoloji cekici ile dikkatli bir sekilde kirin. Her vurustan once koruma gozlugunuzu takin — kaya parcalari tehlikelidir. Cizik testi yapmak

Her numuneyi glazursuz bir porselen plaka (cizik plakasi) uzerinde surterek cizik rengini kontrol edin. Malakit acik yesil cizik birakir. Azurit acik mavi cizik birakir. Kalkopirit yesil-siyah cizik birakir. Dogal bakir metalik bakir renginde parlak cizik birakir. Cizik rengi, mineralin tozunun gercek rengidir ve gozle tanimlamadan daha guvenilirdir.

Performing a hardness test

Identify the mineral using the Mohs hardness scale. Malachite has a hardness of 3.5-4 — it can be slightly scratched with a copper coin (3.5). Chalcopyrite has a hardness of 3.5-4. Native copper has a hardness of 2.5-3 — it cannot be scratched with a fingernail (2.5) but a steel knife (5.5) scratches it easily. These tests help you confirm the mineral's identity.

Classifying samples

Group the cleaned samples by mineral type: malachite (green), azurite (blue), chalcopyrite (yellow-metallic), native copper (reddish-metallic), and host rock (copper-bearing rock). For each group, note the average size, color intensity, and estimated copper content. Samples with high copper content feel heavier — copper's density is 8.96 g/cm³.
