Annealing Oven: a Firebrick Chamber over a Firebox

Annealing is holding work hot and letting it cool slowly so it loses its stresses or softens. Glass is held at about 454–482 °C for most kinds, then cooled slowly; metal is often left to cool in the oven with the fire out. Build a firebrick chamber over a small firebox, with a door, a damper and a pyrometer, so it can be held at heat and then shut up to cool. The picture: putting bottles into the annealing oven at a glass works, 1908 (Lewis Hine).

Instructions

1

Lay the firebox

On a level base, lay firebricks in refractory mortar for a small firebox with an opening for fuel and air.

2

Grate and chamber

Forge iron bars to lay across the top of the firebox as a floor with gaps for the heat, and build the chamber walls on it, leaving a flue hole in the roof.

Door, damper and pyrometer

Fit an iron-sheet door lined with brick and a sliding sheet damper over the flue. Set the pyrometer through the side wall into the chamber.

Dry and first firing

Let the mortar dry for several days, then fire gently with charcoal and raise the heat slowly. Practise holding the chamber at the heat you need, and shutting door, damper and firebox to cool it down slowly.
