Barium: Barium Oxide Heated with Aluminium at 1200 °C in Vacuum (Guntz, Thorpe 1912)

Aluminium pulls the oxygen from barium oxide at 1200 °C. In a vacuum the freed barium boils off and condenses as metal in the cool end of the tube. Result: silver-white barium, up to 98.8 % pure. It burns easily in air; Thorpe keeps barium in dry carbon dioxide. Source: Thorpe, Dictionary of Applied Chemistry vol. 1 (1912), p. 418, after Guntz. Not given: the tube, amounts and time. Instructions

1

Mix oxide with one-tenth aluminium

Weigh barium oxide and mix it with one-tenth of its weight of aluminium. Ours: aluminium powder.

Materials for this step:

Barium OxideBarium Oxide1 as required

Tools needed:

Aluminium PowderAluminium Powder

2

Heat to 1200 °C in vacuum

Heat the mixture to 1200 °C in an evacuated tube. Ours: a porcelain tube in a tube furnace on a vacuum pump. Barium vapour attacks glass; in his other method Guntz lines the tube with nickel foil.

3

Collect the metal from the cool end

The barium condenses in the cooler part of the tube. Take it out and keep it in dry carbon dioxide; it oxidises fast in air.
