Battery: a Home-Made Leclanché Cell with a Canvas Bag (Hasluck, 1908)

A wet cell for bell work: a carbon plate packed in a canvas bag with crushed coke and manganese dioxide, an amalgamated zinc strip beside it, in a quart jam jar of sal-ammoniac solution. It gives a strong current in short bursts and recovers between them. Two such cells ring a 2 1/2 or 3 in bell. Source: Paul N. Hasluck, Electric Bells (1908), pp. 81-87. Unknown: the Brunswick black recipe. Picture: Figs. 78-80 of the book.
