Black Paint: Lampblack Ground in Linseed Oil
Black oil paint is lampblack, one of the oldest pigments, ground into linseed oil. Mix the soot and oil into a crumbly mass on a stone slab, then grind it a little at a time under a glass muller to a smooth paste. It dries by taking up oxygen from the air, not by evaporating.
