Bristle Paint Brushes: Wide Flat and a Set of Rounds and Flats

A brush is a knot of bristle held in a metal ferrule on a wooden handle. Hog bristle is stiffer and stronger than soft hair; a flat brush spreads paint quickly and evenly, a round one with a pointed tip does detail. Bind and glue boar-bristle knots, set them in copper ferrules, and fit beech handles: a wide flat brush and a set of small flats, rounds, a filbert and a liner. The picture: our diagram, a wide flat brush and four small brushes.

Instructions

1

Sort the bristle

Comb boar bristles straight, keep the natural tips together at one end, and cut the root ends level. Lengths: about twice the knot width for flats, longer for rounds and the liner (our rule).

2

Tie and glue the knots

Bundle each knot, tie the root end tightly with waxed thread, and dip the root in hide glue melted in a beaker standing in hot water. For rounds and the liner, shape the tips to a point before the glue sets.
