Cadmium Sulfate: Cadmium Metal Dissolved in Dilute Sulfuric Acid

Cadmium dissolves in sulfuric acid, giving off hydrogen, and the sulfate is very soluble (Thorpe, 1912). Evaporated, the solution gives white crystals of cadmium sulfate, the salt used for cadmium yellow and the Weston standard cell. Cadmium compounds are poisonous: gloves, no dust, no food nearby. The picture: cadmium sulfate hydrate (photo by Leiem, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0).
