Carbon Disulfide: Sulphur over Red-Hot Charcoal, Fownes

Carbon disulfide forms when sulphur vapour meets red-hot charcoal. It is a heavy, very volatile liquid that dissolves sulphur and phosphorus. George Fownes's chemistry manual gives the bench method: a porcelain tube of charcoal across a furnace, sulphur dropped in, the vapour caught over ice, then redistilled gently. It is poisonous and catches fire very easily.
