Chlorine: Red Lead Heated with Hydrochloric Acid
Red lead also gives chlorine when heated with hydrochloric acid, as Thorpe's Dictionary (1912) notes: Pb3O4 + 8HCl = Cl2 + 3PbCl2 + 4H2O. Lead chloride stays behind. Chlorine cannot be breathed: it rapidly attacks the membranes. Fume hood, respirator.
