Copper Carbonate: Blue Vitriol Precipitated with Washing Soda

Pour washing soda into a solution of copper sulfate and a pale blue sludge falls out; warm it and it turns into a dense green powder. George Fownes (1856) gives this as the way the pigment is made; it is close in make-up to the mineral malachite. Potters and glassmakers use it as a copper colour. The picture: a heap of basic copper carbonate powder.

Instructions

1

Two solutions

Dissolve the copper sulfate in one beaker of warm water and the washing soda in another.

Materials for this step:

Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O)Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O)250 g
Washing SodaWashing Soda290 g
WaterWater2 liters

Pour in the soda

Pour the soda slowly into the copper, stirring; it froths as gas comes off. A pale blue sludge falls out. Stop when more soda no longer makes any.

Limits

The precipitation and the change to green are Fownes's; the quantities are ours. Copper salts are harmful if swallowed; do not breathe the dry powder.
