Denatured Alcohol: French Excise Formula (U.S. Dispensatory, 1907)

Alcohol made unfit to drink the French way: to every hectolitre (100 litres) add 500 cc of petroleum benzin and 1 g of malachite green, which spoils the taste and dyes it bluish green. The Dispensatory notes a weakness: the green colour can be destroyed with calcium hypochlorite. Source: The Dispensatory of the United States, 19th ed. (1907), p. 105. Picture: the book's text.
