Denim: Indigo Warp, White Weft, Woven in Twill
Denim is a sturdy cotton twill: the weft passes under two or more warp threads, which gives the diagonal ribbing. In indigo denim only the warp is dyed and the weft is left white, so the cloth is blue on one face and nearly white on the other, which is why jeans are pale inside.

Dye the warp yarn
Dye the warp yarn
Dye the warp skeins of cotton yarn deep blue in an indigo vat, dipping and airing several times. Leave the weft yarn undyed.

Wind the yarn
Wind the yarn
Wind the dyed yarn for the warp and the white yarn onto shuttle bobbins for the weft.

Warp the loom for twill
Warp the loom for twill
Measure and beam the blue warp as in Warping a Treadle Loom, threading the heddles straight across four shafts for a twill.

Weave the twill
Weave the twill
Weave with the white weft, treadling so that it passes under three warp ends and over one, stepping one end along each pick (our 3/1 twill). The blue warp shows on the face in diagonal lines.

Cut off and finish
Cut the cloth off the loom, knot the warp ends and wash it once (our finish).
