Diagonal Screw Dasher Churn: Dished Blades on a Slanting Shaft Twist the Butter Together
Jacob Boyers of Granville, Virginia, received US 13,421, dated 14 August 1855, for dished, perforated dashers set "at an angle thereto, so as to resemble a screw" on a shaft laid diagonally in the tub, so the butter is gathered "lump joining lump as it is twisted by the screw."
This rung prints the dashers, step and top slot, fits them in a tub and makes butter.

"The placing the shaft diagonally in the tub, is not from mere caprice; its position enables me to create a vortex, or whirlpool; the lower end of the shaft, viz., at A; while on the opposite side of the tub, viz., at B, the butter is comparatively quiet and suffered to gather in lumps."

Use a rectangular food-grade container about 260 by 180 mm and 220 mm deep. Seal the step into one bottom corner with food-safe silicone and clip the top slot on the opposite rim. Slide the dashers onto a 10 mm square hardwood shaft, each turned 60° from the last, and lay it from the step into the slot. Glue a crank arm and handle on its top end.

Let the heavy cream stand until it reaches about 15 °C, checked with the thermometer. Pour in 2 litres. Turn the crank steadily and watch the butter gather on the quiet side; time until it comes. Pour off the buttermilk, add cold water, churn a little and pour off again until it runs clear; work in a pinch of salt and weigh the butter.

History and honest limits
**Jacob Boyers** of Granville, Virginia (the specification writes "Monongahela" County), US 13,421, 14 August 1855. He claimed the shaft combined with the dashers as arranged. A container and printed parts stand in for his tub. FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn.
