E-glass Yarn ECD 450-1/2: Two Twisted Strands Plied

Continuous glass filament is processed much like silk and rayon: strands are twisted, then two are plied together the other way. This is yarn ECD 450-1/2 from the US glass-yarn standard MIL-Y-1140H (1972): electrical-grade (alkali-free) glass, continuous filament, fibre about 0.00023 in thick, strands of 45,000 yards per pound, one strand twisted, two plied. It is the warp and filling of style 112 glass cloth for laminates (MIL-C-9084C). The picture: our diagram.

Instructions

1

Check the strand

Use alkali-free E-glass strand of D filaments (about 0.00023 in, 5.8 µm) with about 45,000 yards per pound (about 90 m per gram).

Twist each strand: 5.0 turns per inch, Z

Twist single strands to 5.0 turns per inch (about 2 per cm) in the Z direction. Ours: a ring spinning frame as the twister.

Ply two: 4.4 turns per inch, S

Ply two twisted strands together at 4.4 turns per inch (about 1.7 per cm) in the S direction, against the twist of the singles.

Check and put up

The finished yarn is about 0.0074 in (0.19 mm) thick, 22,500 yards per pound (±10 %; about 45 m per gram), and breaks at no less than 2.2 lb (1.0 kg), no single test below 80 % of that. Wind it on tubes or cones.
