Extruded Polystyrene Foam: Butylene-Blown Logs 20 Inches Across (McIntire, Dow 1948, Ex. 4)

Extruded polystyrene foam blown with a butylene gas fraction. 300 lb of polystyrene and about 130 lb of the fraction stand two days at 110 °C under 265 psi. Opened again and again, the tower let out foam logs 20 inches across and 20 feet long, weighing only 0.8 lb per cubic foot. Unknown: a source for the butylene fraction, linked to an unknown head. Source: O. R. McIntire (Dow), US 2,450,436 (1948), Example 4. Picture: the patent's drawing.

2

Add the butylene fraction

Add about 130 lb of a cracked-oil gas fraction that is about 87 % normal butylenes, with some butanes and butadiene, under pressure. Unknown: a source for this fraction. Flammable gas: no flames, strong ventilation.

3

Heat two days at 110 °C

Close the tower and heat it at 110 °C for two days. The gauge pressure stays at 265 psi.

4

Let out logs through a 3.25 inch outlet

Open and close the 3.25 inch outlet near the bottom again and again. Each portion swells into a foam log 20 inches across and about 20 feet long, with fine, even, closed cells, weighing 0.8 lb per cubic foot.
