Ferric Hydroxide: Precipitated from Ferric Chloride with Excess Ammonia

Hydrated ferric oxide, the brown, slimy precipitate Thorpe's Dictionary (1912) says is best made by adding excess ammonia to ferric chloride solution. Freshly precipitated it dissolves readily in acids; it shrinks a great deal as it dries. The picture: our diagram.

Instructions

1

Precipitate with excess ammonia

Add excess ammonia to ferric chloride solution: a bulky, brown, slimy precipitate comes down. No amounts are given. Ours: in a beaker, in a fume hood.

Materials for this step:

Filter and wash (ours)

Ours: filter off the precipitate and wash it with water. Keep it moist if it is to be dissolved again: it shrinks considerably in drying.
