Fine Mesh Sieve and Strainer: Wire Cloth in a Beech Frame

A sieve is a woven mesh held in a frame; old wooden sieve rims were often beech. Nail fine wire cloth across the bottom of a small beech box and bind its edge with a strip. Shaken dry, it sifts powders; held over a pot, it strains solids out of a liquid. The picture: a wooden flour sifter with a wire mesh bottom.
