Fire Pit: a Shallow Pit Ringed with Stones
A fire pit contains a fire and keeps it from spreading. The simplest is a hole dug in the ground; a ring of stones makes a fire ring. Place it at least three metres from any building, clear the ground round it, dig a shallow pit and ring it with dry stones; stones can burst when heated, so choose them with care.

Ring it with stones
Set a ring of stones round the edge, bedded into the soil so they do not roll. Use stones that have been lying dry; stones from streams or wet ground hold water and are more likely to burst when heated (our caution).
