Foundry Hand Ladle: Iron Bowl, Long Shank, Clay Lining

A foundry ladle carries molten metal from the furnace to the mould. Small hand ladles look like a kitchen ladle, with a long handle to keep the heat away, a refractory lining inside the metal shell, and a lip to pour from by tilting. Raise an iron bowl with lips, rivet on a long forged shank with a wooden grip, and line it with fire clay. The picture: a moulder pouring into sand moulds from a hand ladle (Safe Foundry Practice, 1920).
