Gamboge Resin Tapped into Bamboo Canes

Gamboge is the yellow gum-resin of the gamboge tree (Garcinia). Cut a spiral into the bark of a tree at least ten years old, let the milky yellow latex drip into a hollow bamboo cane, and when it has set, break the bamboo away to leave a rod of raw gamboge. It is poisonous if eaten. The picture: our diagram, the spiral cut, the cane, and the raw rods.
