Gear Motor: Small Motor on a Three-Shaft Box of Floating Gears (Swenson 1959)

A small motor with a reduction gearbox bolted on. Swenson's box has only three shafts: the motor shaft with its pinion, a fixed stub shaft, and the output shaft. The gears ride free on the two shafts in pairs and pass the drive back and forth between them, slower at each step. Only the last gear is fixed to the output shaft. Source: Thure R. Swenson, US 2,908,180 (1959). Unknown: the motor, the fibre gear material, the thrust bearing, the metals, and every size and ratio. Swenson gives none of these, so they are linked to unknown heads. The machining is ours. Picture: the patent's drawing.

Instructions

1

Make the housing and cover

Make the gearbox: a housing with mounting bosses for the motor (Swenson's is a die-casting) and a front cover plate held by screws. Bore the housing for the motor-shaft nipple and for the output shaft's inner bearing, and form a seat in the cover for the outer sleeve bearing. Unknown: the metal and the sizes.

Cut the gears and shafts

Make the stub shaft and the output shaft. Cut the train: a small pinion for the motor shaft; a fibre gear 34 with a pinion fixed to it; gear 23 with pinion; gear 35 with pinion; gear 24 with pinion; and the final gear 36. Unknown: the tooth numbers and ratios.

Mount the motor with its front bearing on the housing

The motor is conventional except for its front bearing: a casting held on the housing by screws, with a nipple fitting a bore in the housing and a sleeve bearing in the nipple. The motor shaft goes through it into the gearbox. Fix the small pinion on its end.

Assemble the floating train

On the output shaft, float the fibre gear (meshing with the motor pinion) and gear 35. On the stub shaft, float gears 23 and 24. Each drives the next by its pinion: 34 to 23, 23 to 35, 35 to 24, and 24 to the final gear 36. Press 36 onto the output shaft. Carry the output shaft in an inner bearing in the housing and a larger sleeve bearing in the cover, with a thrust ball bearing at its inner end. Screw the cover on.
