Glass Wool: Steam-Blown from an Electrically Reheated Glass Stream (Slayter, US 2,133,235)

Very fine glass wool needs very hot glass at the blower, but a stream loses heat on its way out of the furnace. Games Slayter of Owens-Illinois (filed 1933, US 2,133,235) reheated the stream as it left: it runs through a silicon-carbide element lined with platinum, then a steam blast draws it into fine filaments, which a conveyor carries under a roll that presses them into a loose mat. Not given: the glass, any temperature, the current, the steam pressure and the sizes. Source: G. Slayter, US 2,133,235 (1938), Figs. 1-4. Picture: his Fig. 1.

Instructions

1

Melt and refine the glass

Melt and refine the glass in the furnace's tank, which feeds the forehearth continuously.

Materials for this step:

Tools needed:

Glass Melting FurnaceGlass Melting Furnace
2

Feed it to the bushing

The refined glass flows along the forehearth, an extension of the furnace, to a well in its floor. A refractory bushing is held under the well by a ring. Raise or lower the refractory plug in the glass above the bushing to set the flow.

3

Reheat the stream

The bushing carries a silicon-carbide element (Slayter used "Globars") with a hole through its middle and an arm on each side, cabled to terminals. A layer of platinum spun onto the inner surface keeps the glass off the element. Pass current through the element and the platinum: the glass is heated again as it runs through the hole, so it reaches the blower hot enough to blow very fine wool without overheating the forehearth.

4

Blow it into filaments

Let the stream fall through a steam blower fed with steam by a pipe. The blast draws the glass out into fine filaments.

5

Collect a loose mat

The filaments gather on a conveyor, which carries them under a roll that presses the wool into a loose mat.
