Grosgrain Ribbon: Close Plain Weave with a Heavy Weft

Grosgrain is a firm, closely woven plain weave with a heavier weft than warp, which gives it ribs running across the width. It is used for hat bands, facings and waistbands. Historically it was silk or wool; this one is cotton, woven narrow on a rigid heddle loom. The picture: grosgrain ribbons (Wikimedia Commons).

Instructions

1

The thread and twine

Spinning the fine warp thread and the heavier twine used as weft.
2

Measure the warp

For a ribbon 2.5 cm wide and 3 m long, wind enough fine warp threads to fill 2.5 cm of the heddle, each 3.5 m long to allow for tying on and loom waste.

Materials for this step:

Cotton Warp ThreadCotton Warp Thread1 as required

Tools needed:

3

Thread the heddle

Centre the warp in the heddle, one end through each slot and each hole, wind on under even tension and tie on at the front.

4

Weave with a heavy weft

Wind the twine on the shuttle. Weave plain weave: one pass with the heddle up, one with it down, and beat each pick firmly so the weave is close and the heavy weft forms ribs across the ribbon.

5

Keep the edges straight

Draw each pick snug at the edges so the ribbon keeps its width; measure the width often.

Tools needed:

RulerRuler
6

Cut off and secure

Cut the ribbon off the loom and knot or stitch both ends so the weft cannot slip off.
