Gummed Paper Labels: Paper Backed with Gum Arabic, Moistened to Stick

Before self-adhesive labels, labels and stamps were gummed: the back is coated with a water-soluble gum such as gum arabic, left to dry, and moistened when the label is put on. Coat a sheet of paper, dry it flat, and cut it into labels. The picture: our diagram, coating to cut labels.
