Hydro-treated Gasoline: Cracked Light Gas Oil and Isoheptanes Desulphurised with Hydrogen over Cobalt Molybdate at 700 °F (Gulf, US 3,071,535)

Sulphur in petrol and fuel oil is removed by heating the oil with hydrogen over a cobalt molybdate catalyst. Gulf treats its cracked light gas oil together with isoheptanes this way; a small gasoline fraction comes out alongside the desulphurised gas oil. Result (Gulf's example, barrels per day): from 10,555 of FCC light gas oil and 1,796 of isoheptanes, 1,825 of hydro-treated gasoline and 10,559 of treated light gas oil for No. 2 fuel oil. Source: Condrasky & Glazier, US 3,071,535 (Gulf, filed 1959). Not given: reactor design, how the products are separated. Hot hydrogen under pressure: fire risk. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Instructions

1

Charge the light gas oil and isoheptanes

Feed the light gas oil from the catalytic cracker (10,555 barrels a day) and the isoheptanes and heavier from the isomerisation prefractionator (1,796).

Materials for this step:

2

Desulphurise at 700 °F and 600 psig

Pass the oil with hydrogen over cobalt molybdate on alumina at, for example, 700 °F and 600 pounds per square inch gauge, at 4 volumes of oil per volume of catalyst per hour and 4,000 standard cubic feet of hydrogen per barrel.

3

Separate the gasoline and the gas oil

Separate the products: fuel gas, hydro-treated gasoline (1,825) for petrol blending and treated light gas oil (10,559) for No. 2 fuel oil. Gulf does not describe the separation. Ours: a fractionating still.
