Jute Fibre Retted in Running Water and Stripped by Hand

Jute is the bast fibre of Corchorus, made into burlap sacks, twine and rope. Bundle the cut stems and sink them in slow running water to ret; when the fibre comes away, scrape off the soft matter and pull the long fibres out of the stems by hand, then wash and dry them.
