Kwian Mai Tok (Bamboo-Strip Push Cart) — Two 50 cm Bamboo Strips Bent into Half-Circles and Tied into the Folded End of a 1.5 m Bamboo Pole, 5-10 cm Apart; Pushed Along in a Race

เกวียนไม้ตอก (kwian mai tok, the bamboo-strip cart) is a Thai folk toy made from bamboo: bamboo strips form a frame like an ox-cart. The curves of the strips act as the wheels, and the bamboo pole is held in the hand to push it along. This blueprint makes a real kwian mai tok to the sizes in the source.

Strips and pole

Cut bamboo about 50 cm long and shave 2 strips about 3 mm thick and 5 mm wide. Take bamboo about 1.5 metres long for the pole and notch the wood with a knife over about 1-2 cm so the short end can fold down parallel to the long part without breaking.

Insert and tie the first ends

Push one end of each strip into the notched fold, at right angles to the pole. Fold the short part down along the long part, enclosing the ends of the strips, and tie the strips to the pole tightly with string, using the string to keep the two strips apart.

History and limits

The kwian mai tok is a Thai folk toy made from bamboo. Take care with the knife when shaving and notching. Source: Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, Traditional Objects of Everyday Use database, "เกวียนไม้ตอก", author not named (CC BY 4.0 licence). **Limits** The source says to shave the pole to about 30 cm wide, but the drawings show a slender pole. The illustrations are drawings.
