Magnesium Oxide: Magnesium Burned in Air
Magnesia, MgO, is what magnesium leaves when it burns: Thorpe's Dictionary (1912) gives it as the product of the combustion of magnesium in air, a white amorphous powder, alkaline to litmus but not caustic, and almost insoluble in water. The metal burns with a blinding white flame: do not look straight at it.
