Methyl Chloride: Hydrogen Chloride into Boiling Methanol over Zinc Chloride, Groves 1874

Hydrogen chloride gas bubbled into a boiling solution of zinc chloride in twice its weight of methanol is absorbed completely, and methyl chloride gas comes off until all the methanol is used (Groves, 1874). The gas is dried and squeezed into cylinders, where it stays liquid. Methyl chloride is the start of the silicones. The picture: our diagram of generator, flask and cylinder.
