Natural Cork Sheet: Boiled Bark Sliced Flat

Cork is the bark of the cork oak, stripped without felling the tree. Boiled and pressed flat, a plank of it can be sliced into sheets for gaskets, pinboards and underlay, the same way the bark is prepared for stoppers. The picture: harvested cork bark stacked to season, Algarve, Portugal.
Beginner
A day, after seasoning

Instructions

1

Season, boil and flatten the bark

Season the bark planks, boil them for an hour and let them dry flat under a light weight, exactly as for cork stoppers.
2

Mark the thickness

Scrape off any hard outer crust. Gauge a line round the edge of the plank at the sheet thickness you want, for example 3 to 6 mm.
