Nickel: Oxide Cubes Reduced with Carbon in Crucibles

Nickel can be won from its oxide with carbon, as in Thorpe's Dictionary (1912): the oxide is bound with sugar syrup, moulded into cubes, dried and heated with carbon in crucibles for about 24 hours. The heat is not enough to melt the nickel. Nickel made this way is somewhat brittle; a broken piece shows a dull-grey, crystalline face. The picture: our diagram.

Instructions

1

Bind the oxide with sugar syrup

Mix nickel oxide with sugar syrup. Thorpe gives no amounts. Ours: syrup from white sugar dissolved in warm water.

Materials for this step:

2

Mould into cubes and dry

Mould the paste into cubes and dry them. Ours: shaped by hand, dried in a drying oven.

3

Heat with carbon in crucibles, about 24 hours

Pack the cubes with carbon in crucibles and heat for about 24 hours. Thorpe gives no temperature; it stays below the melting point of nickel. Ours: a charcoal furnace.
