Nylon Insert Lock Nut: a Nylon Collar Crimped into a Steel Nut

A nut that will not shake loose. A nylon collar sits in a recess at the top of the nut; its hole is a little smaller than the bolt, so the bolt presses its own thread into the nylon and the nylon grips it. Sauer (US 2,450,694, 1948) chose nylon over the older fibre collar: it hardly takes up water and still locks after 50 to 100 re-uses. The collar is held as Swanstrom's patent (US 2,153,681, 1939) shows: the recess wall is pressed in and crimped over it. Size M10 is ours. The picture: a nylon-insert lock nut (Wikimedia Commons).

Instructions

1

Cut and turn the blank

Saw a blank from hex bar. On the lathe, turn the top part round, with a wall that tapers toward the top.

Materials for this step:

Mild Steel Hex BarMild Steel Hex Bar1.5 cm

Tools needed:

2

Drill and tap

Drill through and tap an M10 thread.

3

Counterbore the top

Counterbore the top of the bore with an ordinary twist drill. It leaves a recess with a conical floor.

4

Mould the nylon collar

Mould a nylon washer that fits the recess, with a hole somewhat smaller than the bolt's outside thread diameter. Nylon is thermoplastic, so scrap can be moulded again.

5

Seat and crimp

Push the collar down onto the recess floor. In the press, squeeze the recess wall inward against the collar and bend its top edge over it.

Tools needed:

Arbor PressArbor Press
6

Try it on a bolt

Screw the nut onto a bolt. It runs freely until the bolt reaches the collar, then turns stiffly as the bolt cuts a thread in the nylon.

Hex Bolt - Grade 8.8Hex Bolt - Grade 8.8
