Ox Gall Liquid Clarified with Alum and Salt, Ure 1839
Ox gall makes watercolours spread evenly and fixes them, but raw it stains with its own green. Andrew Ure (1839): boil and skim the gall, dissolve alum in one half and salt in the other, let both settle three months, then mix the clear parts in equal measure: the colour falls out and leaves the gall clear.

Boil the fresh gall and skim it. Divide it into two equal halves.

Alum and salt
Into one half stir powdered alum and keep it on the fire until dissolved; into the other, common salt, dissolved with heat (step 5). Cool each and bottle them separately, loosely corked.

Settle three months
Leave both bottles about three months in a moderately warm place, until a thick sediment has fallen and the liquid is clear.

Mix and clear
Pour off the clear part of each and mix them in equal measure: the remaining colour curdles and sinks. Let it settle, pour off the clear gall, and filter it through paper if you want it finer.
