Phenolphthalein Indicator Solution: the Pharmacopoeia Test Solution (U.S. Dispensatory, 1907)

The pharmacopoeia's phenolphthalein indicator: 1 g of phenolphthalein dissolved in 50 cc of alcohol and made up to 100 cc with water. Three drops in 50 cc of liquid turn red with alkali hydroxides or carbonates and colourless with acids. It works in hot titrations but is not suitable for ammonia. Check it is neutral

As soon as it is made, and from time to time after, add a few drops to 25 cc of water: a few drops of hundredth-normal alkali should distinctly turn it red. If not, bring it to that point by cautiously adding very dilute sulphuric acid or very dilute alkali.
