Plastic Injection Moulding: Containers, Buckets, Fittings and Preforms

Most plastic objects with a lid, a handle or a fitting are injection moulded. A screw melts the pellets and, moving forward like a plunger, injects the melt into a closed steel or aluminium mould; pressure is held while the part shrinks, then it cools, the mould opens and the part is ejected. The clamp must hold the mould shut against the melt: roughly 1.8 to 7.2 tonnes for every square centimetre of the part's projected area. Injection itself often takes well under a second. A benchtop moulder with an aluminium mould does the same at maker scale. Food containers need a food-grade resin.

Instructions

1

Dry and load

Dry the pellets if the resin needs it and load the hopper.

Materials for this step:

Polypropylene PelletsPolypropylene Pellets50 kg
HDPE PelletsHDPE Pellets50 kg
PVC Compound PelletsPVC Compound Pellets20 kg
PET Resin PelletsPET Resin Pellets20 kg

Tools needed:

Pellet Hopper FeederPellet Hopper Feeder
2

Make the mould

Mill the cavity into the mould halves with sprue, runners, gates, vents and ejector pins; at maker scale, an aluminium two-plate blank in a mould frame.

3

Inject and hold

The mould closes, the screw injects the melt, and holding pressure packs the cavity as it shrinks.

4

Cool and eject

While the part cools, the screw turns and draws back, preparing the next shot; the mould opens and pins push the part out.

5

Inspect

Check parts for short shots, sink marks and flash, and measure critical dimensions.
