Polymer Gasoline: Propylene from Cracked Gas Polymerised over Phosphoric Acid (Gulf, US 3,071,535)

The propylene in a refinery's cracked gas can be joined into gasoline-sized molecules over a phosphoric acid catalyst. The result is an olefinic polymer gasoline of high research octane but high sensitivity, so Gulf blends it into regular grade only. Result (Gulf's example, barrels per day): from 4,851 of C3 fractions, 1,645 of polymer gasoline; the propane and unreacted gas, 1,552 as fuel-oil equivalent, go to fuel. Source: Condrasky & Glazier, US 3,071,535 (Gulf, filed 1959). Not given: temperature, pressure, reactor design. Liquefied gases under pressure: fire risk. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Instructions

1

Collect the C3 streams

Gather the olefinic C3 fractions of the refinery: in Gulf's example 4,230 barrels a day from the catalytic cracker and 621 from the coker.

Materials for this step:

Transfer PumpTransfer Pump
2

Polymerise over phosphoric acid

Contact the C3 stream with a polymerisation catalyst such as phosphoric acid, which joins the propylene into olefinic polymer gasoline. Gulf gives no temperature or pressure. Ours: a solid phosphoric acid catalyst in a pressure reactor.

3

Separate the polymer gasoline from the gas

Separate the liquid polymer gasoline (1,645) from the C3 gas left over (1,552 as fuel-oil equivalent), which is used as fuel. Ours: a fractionating still.

4

Keep it for regular grade

Because its octane sensitivity is rather high, the polymer gasoline is blended into regular-grade petrol, not premium.
