Polyvinyl Acetate: Vinyl Acetate Set Solid by Sunlight

Klatte and Rollett (Griesheim-Elektron, patent 1917) found that vinyl acetate left in sunlight, or under a mercury vapour lamp, turns into a clear, colourless solid like celluloid. It can be cut and turned, softened in hot water and moulded, and dissolved in ethyl acetate as a lacquer. It is the polymer behind PVA glue. The picture: our diagram, liquid to solid in the light.

Instructions

1

Fill a clear vessel

Pour vinyl acetate into a clear glass jar and close it (our vessel). Its vapour ignites easily: no flames near it.

Materials for this step:

2

Set it in the light

Stand the jar in direct sunlight, or under a mercury vapour lamp. Stronger light and warmth make it set faster; it first turns syrupy, then solid.

3

Take out the solid

The product is clear, colourless and odourless. Cut or turn it, or soften it in hot water and mould it; it hardens again as it cools.
