Rice Straw Ash: Burned in a Pit and Sieved

Japanese swordsmiths coat the steel in clay, water and straw ash between heatings and folds, to keep it from oxidising. Burn dry rice straw down to ash in a pit, let it cool, and sieve it fine. The picture: our diagram, straw to fire to sieved ash.
