Rubber Hose: Braided, Spirally Wrapped and Vulcanized in Long Lengths

Henry Cobb's wrapped hose (Revere Rubber, US 1,230,867, 1917). A rubber tube is forced through a ring die, braided over while held open by pressure, wrapped by machine with a helical strip of frictioned fabric overlapping half its width, covered in rubber and vulcanized. Wrapping by machine instead of rolling bias-cut fabric by hand lets the hose run 500 ft or more, and Cobb says it stands nearly twice the bursting pressure. The patent gives no sizes, recipes or cure times. Couplings are not part of it: an air hose is this hose with couplings fitted. The picture: the patent's sheet 1.

Instructions

1

Force the inner tube

Force vulcanizable rubber compound through the ring-shaped gap between the two parts of a tube die to make the inner tube (1).

Tools needed:

2

Braid over the tube

Run the tube through a braiding machine that lays crossing helical strands over it (2), coating the strands with rubber compound as they braid. Keep the tube under air pressure so it does not collapse. Ours: the air from a compressor. The braid may be left out, but it holds the hose to size.

3

Cut the fabric along the warp

Cut frictioned fabric into a long strip lengthwise, along the warp threads; wound helically, both warp and weft then run round the hose as if cut on the bias.

Wrap the strip half over

Feed the braided tube through the wrapping machine, which winds the strip (3) round it under tension, each turn over half the last: two plies, the whole length without stopping. For four plies wind a second strip (5) over the first, in the same pass or a second.

Cover and vulcanize

Apply a layer of rubber compound (4) over the last winding for a smooth, protected outside. Vulcanize the hose for its whole length in a mould or otherwise.
