Sand Bath in a Sunk Iron Pan

A sand bath is a pan of sand set over the heat. A flask or dish bedded in the sand is warmed on all sides, not just on the bottom. Alchemists already used it. Here a shallow pan is hammered from iron sheet into a hollow and then filled with sieved sand. The picture: our diagram of a flask bedded in sand in an iron pan over a fire.

Instructions

1

Cut the disc

Scribe a circle on the iron sheet with the dividers and cut it out with the snips. File the edge smooth.

Materials for this step:

Iron Sheet (Hammered)Iron Sheet (Hammered)1 piece

Tools needed:

2

Carve a hollow

Gouge a shallow round hollow into the end grain of a hardwood block, about as deep as the pan will be.

3

Sink the pan

Hold the disc over the hollow and hammer it down in rings from the rim toward the centre, turning it as you go. Sinking stretches and thins the sheet, so go evenly. If the iron stiffens, heat it red in the forge and let it cool before going on.
