Scraper: a Hand Scraper Forged from Octagon Steel (Holford, 1907)

A hand scraper takes paint and grease off boiler plate, cast iron or any other material and leaves a bright, smooth surface. Frederick Holford's 20th Century Toolsmith (1907) forges one from 5/8-inch octagon tool steel: the end is drawn perfectly flat, 1/8 inch thick, about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide, with the end left square so its corners do the cutting. It is hardened hard and no temper is drawn. The overall length of the bar is not given; that is unknown here. Source: F. J. Holford, The 20th Century Toolsmith and Steelworker (1907), pp. 176-177 and p. 21 (the hardening bath). Picture: his Fig. 107.

Instructions

1

Read Holford

"A scraper for taking off paint, grease, etc., off boiler plate or any other material and leave a bright smooth surface, is chiefly made from octagon steel ... for an ordinary scraper 5/8 octagon will do."
2

Forge the blade flat

Choose octagon steel to suit the width of scraper wanted; 5/8 inch does for an ordinary one. Forge the end perfectly flat, 1/8 inch thick, about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide, and leave the end perfectly square. The length of the bar left for a handle is not given (unknown).

3

Harden, no temper

Heat about 1 inch back from the scraping edges and quench in the hardening bath, then cool the whole tool. Holford's bath (p. 21) is clean water free from grease, best made a brine with as much salt as it will dissolve, large and cold. Draw no temper: the tool must be very hard.

Grind the corners

Grind the square end so its corners are very sharp: the corners are the scraping edges.

History and honest limits

Holford says the scraper "will give excellent results if properly forged, hammered and hardened". The same hard, untempered scraper is the tool used to bring metal surfaces true by scraping off high spots. The overall length of the bar is not given.
