Sodium Pyrophosphate: Disodium Phosphate Heated to 300 °C

Sodium pyrophosphate is a white salt that dissolves to an alkaline solution. Thorpe's Dictionary (1913) makes it in two easy stages: neutralise phosphoric acid with soda until alkaline and crystallise disodium phosphate, then heat the dried salt to 300 °C, when it gives off water and turns into the pyrophosphate. Instructions

1

Phosphoric acid and soda

Add sodium carbonate to phosphoric acid diluted with water until the solution is alkaline. Filter.

Materials for this step:

Phosphoric Acid (85%)Phosphoric Acid (85%)1 piece
Sodium Carbonate (soda ash)Sodium Carbonate (soda ash)1 piece

2

Crystallise disodium phosphate

Concentrate and let it crystallise: large clear prisms of disodium phosphate. Dry them at about 45 °C until they lose their water.

3

Heat to 300 °C

Heat the dry salt to 300 °C: it gives off water and turns completely into sodium pyrophosphate, a white glassy mass.
