Sodium Sulfide: Salt Cake Reduced with Carbon

Sodium sulfide is made by heating sodium sulfate with carbon: Na2SO4 + 2 C gives Na2S and carbon dioxide, the same reduction as the first step of the Leblanc black ash, at about 1000 °C. It is the sulfide half of the kraft pulping liquor. The picture: our diagram of the covered crucible.
