Split Pins: Half-Round Wire Folded, Pinched and Twisted (Britton 1925)
A split pin is one piece of half-round wire folded in two, flat faces together, so the two legs make a round shank with an eye at the top. Britton's machine cuts the wire, folds it round a pin, pinches the legs together so the eye sits to one side, and twists the eye a quarter turn so it lines up with the split.
Source: William M. Britton, US 1,536,284 (1925). Unknown: the wire's metal and the sizes. Britton gives neither, so they are linked to unknown heads. Picture: the patent's sheet 1.

Feed and cut a strip of half-round wire
Feed half-round wire, flat side down, along the guide until it meets the stop. The knife shears off the strip that makes one pin. Unknown: the metal and the length.

Press the die down: its semicircular recess bends both ends of the strip down round the cylindrical form. The middle wraps round to make the eye, with the legs pointing the same way and their flat sides facing.

Pinch the legs and offset the eye

Close the two side dies with the pedal. One stops early and leaves its leg straight, tangent to the form. The other pushes its leg just past the middle, against the first. The legs make a round shank, and the eye stands out to one side.

Twist the eye a quarter turn and release
Twist the eye a quarter turn and release
With the legs still held, swing the lever through 90°. It turns the die and twists the eye a quarter turn, into the plane of the split. Release the pedal: the form pulls out and the finished pin drops.
