Steel Skelp: Ingot to Bloom to Continuous Skelp Mill (National Tube Co., 1921)

Skelp, the steel strip that welded pipe is made from, as National Tube rolled it in 1921: steel ingots are soaked to an even heat, rolled into blooms and sheared hot to length, then reheated and rolled in a continuous mill into long strips sized for one pipe each. For butt-weld pipe the edges are bevelled slightly and one end is trimmed to a point so the welding tongs can start it through the bell. Unknown: the skelp sizes for each pipe; the 'Spellerizing' roll treatment is named but not described. Source: National Tube Co., "National" Modern Welded Pipe (1921), pp. 38-40. Instructions

1

Soak the ingots

Strip the moulds from the ingots while they are still hot, then set them in a soaking pit and heat them evenly right through to rolling heat. Lift them out with large tongs.

2

Roll into blooms

Roll each ingot out longer in the bloom mill, then shear it hot into blooms or slabs of the size the pipe needs.

3

Roll the skelp

Reheat the blooms and roll them into long strips (skelp). In a continuous mill each bloom passes through several sets of rolls in one direction and comes out as finished skelp. Set the rolls to the length, width and thickness worked out for each size of pipe.

Finish for butt welding

Bevel the edges slightly, so the strip butts truly when it is drawn through the welding die. Trim one end of each piece roughly to a point and press it to shape, so the welding tongs can start it through the bell.
