Stepped Spiral Egg Beater: A Stepped Dasher Spun in a Square Box

A beater spun in a round bowl soon drags the whole mixture round with it. Thomas McBean of Fowlerville, New York, received US 24,134, dated 24 May 1859, for an egg beater: "a double spiral-shaped beater or dasher with its surface formed into steps within a square box," turned horizontally on a vertical shaft by a bevel pinion and a handle, so that the dasher and the square box together "so thoroughly breaks up all portions of the eggs that they may be well and very thoroughly beaten in a few seconds." This rung compares the side and corner gaps, then prints the stepped dasher, builds a square box with a bevel drive, and times beating in the box against a round bowl.

A geared beater a month before it

The embedded blueprint beats with two wire whisks turning opposite ways. McBean turns one stepped dasher and lets the box's corners do the breaking up.

Read US 24,134

"The nature of my invention consists in arranging a double spiral-shaped beater or dasher with its surface formed into steps within a square box and in communicating to this dasher a swift rotary motion so as to revolve it horizontally within said box."

Print the dasher

Print the stepped double-spiral dasher (/uploads/blueprints/stepped-spiral-egg-beater-dasher.stl). Print in PETG at 0.2 mm layers, 30 % infill, 4 walls.

Build the box

Cut a plywood base and four sides to make a box 104 mm square inside and 90 mm deep. Glue and screw it, and seal the inside seams with silicone.

Fit the shaft and gears

Screw a hardwood bar across the box's top with a bracket above it. Run a 5 mm rod down through the bar to a socket in the floor, with the dasher at its foot and one bevel gear at its top; mount the other gear on a crank shaft through the bracket so they mesh.

History and honest limits

**Thomas McBean** of Fowlerville, Livingston County, New York, received US 24,134, dated 24 May 1859. The dasher's spiral circular plates are soldered to a small tube and bent into steps radial from the axis; the shaft passes up through the box's cover to a bracket, its lower end resting on a pin in the box's bottom. He claimed the double spiral dasher in combination with the square box. **Honest limits.** FDM prints hold food in their layer lines, so wash well and replace when worn. A printed dasher and a bought 1:1 bevel pair stand in for his tin plates and pinions. Your times are the result.
