Tellurium: Bismuth Telluride Calcined with Soda and Oil, Air Blown through the Leach (Thorpe 1913)
Roasting bismuth telluride with soda and oil in a closed pot turns the tellurium into sodium telluride, which dissolves in water. Air drawn through the solution throws the tellurium out again as a grey powder.
Result: grey tellurium powder.

1
Powder the ore and make a paste
Powder the ore and make a paste
Grind tetradymite (bismuth telluride) finely, mix it with sodium carbonate and rub it up with oil into a thick paste. Ours: linseed oil.
Materials for this step:
Tetradymite1 as requiredTools needed:
Sodium Carbonate (soda ash)
Linseed Oil
Stone Mortar and Pestle2
2
Calcine in a closed crucible
Calcine in a closed crucible
Calcine the paste in a closed crucible. Ours: a porcelain crucible with lid in a muffle furnace.
Tools needed:
Crucible with Lid (Porcelain)
Muffle Furnace
Crucible Tongs3
3
Leach with cold water
Leach with cold water
Leach the calcined mass with cold water; the sodium telluride dissolves. Ours: filter off what does not dissolve.
Tools needed:
Water
Glass Beaker
Filter Paper4
4
Draw air through
Draw air through
Draw a current of air through the solution. Tellurium separates as a grey powder. Ours: an aspirator, then filter it off.
Tools needed:
Atmospheric Air - Earth
