The Grain Auger: Archimedes' Screw Spun Fast in a Tube
Archimedes' screw lifts water slowly by trapping it between turns of a spiral. Close the spiral in a tight tube and spin it fast, and it moves dry grain instead: the flights push the grain along and the tube keeps it from turning with them. The auger fills bins, empties combine tanks and loads trucks, at any angle from flat to steep, with nothing but a shaft and a motor.
It is a sibling of the bucket elevator: the elevator lifts straight up in buckets and needs a tower; the auger lifts at a slant in a single tube and goes where it is carried.
This rung works out an auger's theoretical delivery and why its fill factor must be measured, and builds a clear-tube auger to measure it at three angles.

The same spiral lifts water when turned slowly in an open trough. The embedded blueprint builds one; compare how each holds its load.

Build a clear-tube auger
3D-print screw flights 40 mm across with a 40 mm pitch, in 150 mm sections with an 8 mm bore, and thread them onto an 8 mm threaded rod locked with nuts. Slide the screw into a clear acrylic tube with a 42 mm bore. Cut an intake window at the bottom and a discharge hole at the top.
Mount the tube on a plywood stand that can be set at 0, 20 and 40 degrees, with the rod running in skateboard bearings at each end. Drive the top end from a geared DC motor on an adjustable supply. Keep your fingers, hair and sleeves clear of the intake window while it turns.

Measure the fill factor
Measure the fill factor
Keep the intake window buried in a tray of lentils. At each angle and at two motor speeds, run for 30 seconds, catch the discharge, weigh it, and read the shaft speed with the tachometer.
Work out the theoretical delivery from the notebook's formula using your flight diameter, rod diameter and pitch, and the lentils' bulk density (weigh a measured jug full). The fill factor is measured delivery divided by theoretical. Tabulate it: it is highest flat and falls as the tube is tipped up, because more lentils slip back over the flights.

Context and honest limits
Context and honest limits
The screw conveyor is old; the portable farm auger in a tube is the form that moves most grain on farms today, from combine unloading augers to bin-filling augers.
**Honest limits.** The notebook's theoretical delivery assumes a full tube moving one pitch per turn — no auger does this, which is why the bench test measures the fill factor. An auger damages some grain by rubbing, more at high speed and with fragile crops. And the exposed intake is one of the most common causes of serious injury on farms: guards stay on.
