The Spring Grapple: Tong-Shaped Spring, Talon Hooks and a Set Joint That Snaps Shut on Touch
Something lying out of reach, under water or down a hole, is hard to grip with a hook on a line.
Orra Warner and Charles S. Gaylord of Gaylord's Bridge, Connecticut, received US 7,709, dated 8 October 1850, for a "grapple" of "a metallic spring of more or less length and thickness, according to the size of the object to be seized, bent so as to resemble in its outlines a pair of sugar-tongs", each end carrying a hook "resembling in form an eagle's talon" on a pin. Forced open, the hooks meet in a set joint held by a set-screw; lowered on a line, wire or pole onto the object, the joint yields as soon as it touches, and the spring drives the hooks together. The grapple was meant for catching fish and animals "and other purposes".
This rung works out how the set joint's angle decides how easily it springs, then forges the spring and hooks and uses the grapple to recover dropped objects from water.

The embedded blueprint forges tongs closed by the hand. Warner and Gaylord's grapple is tongs closed by a spring, triggered by touch.

Read US 7,709
"When the points of the hooks are forced apart far enough to bring the three axes above described nearly in a right line the set-screw in the shoulder of one hook touches the shoulder of the other, thus making a set joint, and the instrument remains open or set ready for use."
"To use the above-described instrument it is, when fastened to a line, wire, or pole, opened and then lowered onto the object desired. As soon as the set joint touches the object the joint yields and the force of the spring brings the points of the hooks forcibly together. The set-screw causes the grapple to spring more or less easily, according as the joint is made more or less open thereby."

Make the grapple and recover objects
**Spring.** Heat and bend a 40 cm strip of spring steel into a sugar-tong shape, and forge each end into an ear with a slot cut open at its end.
**Hooks.** Forge two curved hooks from steel rod, shaped like talons, their inner ends flattened with a tenon on one and a mortise on the other so they pin together. Pin each hook in its ear, and pin the two inner ends to each other as the common axis.
**Set-screw.** Drill and tap one hook's shoulder for a small machine screw that touches the other's shoulder when the joint is nearly straight.
**Swivel.** Fit a swivel or a ring in the spring's bend for the line.
**Test.** Open and set the grapple, lower it on a cord into a bucket of water onto a sunken block of wood or a tin, and lift it out. Turn the set-screw and find the setting that springs reliably but does not go off when handled.

History and honest limits
History and honest limits
**Orra Warner and Charles S. Gaylord** of Gaylord's Bridge, Litchfield County, Connecticut, received US 7,709, dated 8 October 1850. The hooks were fastened in the ears by pins c c; the shoulders e e carried the set-screw d; a swivel f in the spring's short bend took the line. They noted that spring hooks with a set joint were already used as a trap under Thomas A. Davies's patent of 1849, which needed a trigger, and claimed not the set joint but the arrangement of the tong-shaped springs, talons and set joint.
**Honest limits.** Forged spring strip and rod stand in for their made parts, and the grapple is used here only to recover objects. The notebook treats the joint as a simple toggle; its force and angles are examples. Your recovered objects are the result.
